I don’t have any new Christmas fic this year (writing about angels makes the whole thing surprisingly complicated), but I do have a lot of new followers, so I thought I’d share these again!

Sherlock is not broken. Sherlock is abridged, and not even in substance just in … admission. His temper is mecurial, his attention more so, and his capacity for offence - both the giving and receiving of it - infinite. You machine, John had said - but Sherlock is a machine in the sense that a dragonfly is a machine: that all living things are, at base, machines for the construction and continuence of life … glistening red cables sliding over gleaming white joints, minute engines of glucose and phosphorus forging through the long nights. But Sherlock claims, with utter conviction, that he feels nothing, cares for no one.

John is not broken. Nor is John abridged. Everything is there. Everything. The decency and the humanity, the patience and the compassion, the steady hand and the easy stroke of the trigger and the even easier laughter about it later. Things that can’t exist in the same universe exist in him, are held pressed against each other by the steel bands of his thinning skin.

John is something infinitely more disturbing than broken. John is unbreakable.

I just have a lot of feels, okay?

Like the way his jaw hit the floor when Molly took her coat off. Initially I started screaming — I’m not even kidding, just legitimately shrieking at my computer. The idea of Molly-Lestrade is sort of adorable, but it’s also just so god damn heartbreaking when you think about it. 

Lestrade is a clever, hard-working, great guy whose wife clearly doesn’t respect him — probably because he works too much, or he talks about Sherlock too often (because everyone’s lusting for Sherlock, as the episode proved), but for whatever reason it’s highly unlikely Greg’s gotten any in recent months. He’s a good guy — did you see the smile on his face when he said they’d worked things out? Kill me. Just. kill. me. Clearly he had hope because he still loves her, and he wants a normal life — but there she goes again, throwing it in his face, and he’s not sure if it really is fault because god damn, here he is at Sherlock Bloody Holmes’s Christmas party and not with family where he belongs. Is he responsible for this? Is she? For whatever reason, he thinks there’s hope, because he obviously hasn’t been slagging around or he wouldn’t be picking his jaw back up off the god damn floor when Molly showed up. 

To her credit — Molly Hooper is god damn gorgeous. I mean, we’ve always known it but she’s just so shy that sometimes the awkward stumbling over her words whenever Sherlock is in the room makes you forget just how fucking pretty she is. But there she is in that dress, looking beautiful and EVERYONE sees it for once — even Sherlock, although he’s too much of a dunderhead to realise it’s for him until it’s far, far too late. 

Which brings everything back around to the idea of Molly and Lestrade together. Both cast-offs from their respective ‘loved ones’ — both under-appreciated and both insecure enough to constantly wonder if all of their problems are actually their own fault. It’s a romantic tragedy because neither of them gets what they want even though they’re both perfect — but choosing to be with each other would still be an admission of the fact that they’re settling for each other.

That is, until Sherlock Holmes stands up and takes the spotlight and says, “actually, you’ve got 99 problems and they’re all me” because that’s what happens when you’re around Sherlock Holmes. He’s a bloody, burning comet and you can grab hold and be in for the ride of your life but you can never get close enough to actually feel satisfied or you’re going to freeze to death. So you just have to cling to the outer edge, burning up as you plummet into the heart of the world because you just can’t handle all of these god damn feelings. 

FUCKING FEELINGS, SHERLOCK. FEELINGS.

Sherlock sprang up, climbing back over John, pulling the blanket with him and stalked into his bedroom, leaving John slightly dazed on the sofa. He only wanted to watch a bit of Top Gear.

Here, have a ficlet. I am currently wrapped up in my own union jack blanket and thought John might like one, too. Though admittedly he does have a Sherlock Holmes and I do not.

I’m sure everyone else has already had this occur to them, but it struck me today.

When Sherlock and John are talking about John having killed the cabby, Sherlock asks if he’s alright and John says yes.  Sherlock reminds him of what he’s just done and it’s almost like John’s annoyed that he’s getting hung up on the whole idea, and then he catches himself and remembers that that’s no longer the sort of thing that he does everyday; that’s the sort of thing that shocks people.
